How to install windows XP pn Dell Vostro 1500 laptop?

Hello
I have a dell vostro 1500, CPU : core 2 duo 2.2 4mb cache, ram 2, VGA: Gforce 8600GT) with windows vista home basic.
I want to have windows XP on my lap top too. my friend has a Dell Inspiron, he just shrinked drive c so he gave around 30Gb to new drive, but this drive isn't shown untill it is formatted and so you cant format it from vista; and then put XP cd in optical drive and restarted the computer, windows started installing XP and during the installation he could format that drive and installed windows as usual. so we wanted to do same on my laptop, we shrinked the hard drive, and then put XP cd inside, setup would begin, but at the first steps the message said that no hard drive is recognized?
can you help me with that or tell me exactly how can I install XP on vostro 1500? how many of my drivers work with XP?
I preffer to install XP from Vista rather than deleting Vita first.
