| Here it goes: my connection was workin perfectly so i updated my antivirus and had to restart. after doing that my connection no longer acquired ips from the DSL modem nor from the LAN cable. (i have 2 different ISPs) I changed my ethernet cards twice and tried both types of connection on them and still didnt work. when i try to repair the connection it says: could not repair TCP IP settings did not respond check your connection manager. i'm pretty much sure it's from the pc because the cable connection is working on my laptop. wasn't able to system restore for some reason, didn't also work from safe mode. is there a way to deal with this except a format ? |

| What security software are you using? This sounds like an issue I recently experienced with Panda Internet Security 2008. Well, it actually began after a program update, (not the daily signature updates) which added what is called the Panda NDIS IM Filter, which is a new addition to the Panda Firewall. This feature completely knocks out both Internet connectivity and network communication in a wireless connection, and Internet connectivity in the wired connections. It took me some time to figure out what the issue was, had to perform some serious investigative work to the problem, and I found out the cause was the above new filter had been added to each connections Properties on the General tab, under the category of This Connection uses the following items. The box in the middle of the page with the Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) etc section. If you are using Panda, go into the Properties of each system, by right clicking on the connection icon in the notification area and clicking on Status, and then clicking the Properties button on the main page. This opens the Properties page at the General tab. Look in your list of installed Protocols, which is under: This connection uses the following items, and are contained in a box. Then, uncheck the box in front of Panda NDIS IM Filter. There isn't any need to reboot. As soon as you click on OK, then close the Status box as well, the Panda firewall will initiate the steps required to disable the filter, and as soon as it is disabled your connectivity will be reestablished. If your system freezes while in the process of disabling the filter, simply reboot the system. You will need to do this on each system with the issue. Now, if you use a different Internet Security solution you should check out what changes were created by the program update. Due to the fact that this issue began immediately following the update you can be pretty sure the issue has resulted from that update. Open up the properties of your connection and see what components are in the, "This connection uses the following items" area, which are the protocols. See if there are additions other than what is normally included. There are usually three to four components, which are listed above at the start of this post. If you have additional components write them down. Now, open up the applet for Services. Scroll down the list and locate any Services which were installed by your security suite. Please note that not all applications place list their services in this MMC applet. It can be difficult to locate all components and services of a security suite. But, you want to write down any which are there to compare after you remove the firewall, same as you will do with the connection Properties. Uninstall the entire program from your system. Use any special removal tools your solution requires to completely clean it off your file system and your registry.Once the program is removed see if your connection is reestablished. If it is, go ahead and re-install the applications, but use the Custom option and do not install the firewall. Make sure you do not install all firewall components, as often there could be more than one which make up the entire firewall, as is true in Panda. Once you have performed this check if your connection is still viable. If it is you know the firewall is at fault. Now, open your connection Properties again and check of any additional components in the Protocol area are still listed. If it is the firewall as I suspect, you may find that the faulting component is not longer installed in the Properties, because the firewall was not installed. As long as you have ensured you did not install any firewall component. Open your Services applet and check on the listed Services installed by your security application. See if any are no longer there which were there while the firewall and any other firewall component was installed. Checking on these protocols and services allows you the ability to inform your security vendor of the issue you are experiencing. Thus, the vendor can correct the issue in a program update or offer a patch for the program. Panda only has this issue with DSL connections. I am not sure why, but it just does. Cable connections are not affected. I had been told the issue was resolved in the '08 version, but that turned out to not be the case at least in my experience. I have reported the issue to Panda via the link in my program. In the meanwhile it is perfectly fine to run the Panda firewall without the NDIS IM Filter. I can either just uncheck the box in front of the protocol, or I can completely remove it by using the Uninstall button below the window, after selecting the filter in the box. I choose to simply uncheck the box, which re-establishes my connection immediately. Only one time did it freeze the system and a simple reboot corrected the issue. If none of these are your issue I recommend you contact your security vendor's technical department. As this loss of connectivity occurred directly after the program was updated you can be relatively sure that it is at fault here. Your security vendor's technical support should be able to assist you in whatever steps you need to take to fix the issue, or will offer you a refund of your money so you can purchase from a different vendor. I choose to keep my Panda because of my belief that it is overall a great security program and as I have used it without this offending NDIS IM Filter for years I think I can get by without it until Panda Security comes up with a real solution which will allow those with a DSL connection a viable method of implementing it without loss of connectivity. It is up to you what you decide to do in your situation. Good luck and much success in locating the offending issue and getting it corrected. Please have a nice day. *Edit* I just finished typing this and after posting I read your additional comments regarding the fact your cable connection is working on your laptop. So, do you have DSL or Cable Internet connection? If you have both and I did not catch that, then this is further proof it is the Panda firewall or a simular issue. The Panda NDIS IM Filter the Panda firewall installs causes this issue only with DSL Internet connections, not Cable Internet connections. I am unsure why this is so, but it has been confirmed by the Panda Technical Assistance department. If you follow the above steps I outlined for those systems connected via DSL you should get your connection re-established. |
