When I try to reboot my Dell Windows XP my screen goes black and stays black.?

I cannot boot up. I get the windows logo with the green globes underneath that circulate, but then the screen goes black. I am trying to re-install XP but I can't figure out how to load the disc because I can't even reboot in safe mode or any of the other modes. Can someone help and be as detailed as possible... obviously I am not into computers a whole lot. haha. Thanks!

If you have a retail copy of windows xp just boot to the cd and do a repair install, this will leave all your personal files in tact. After you'll have to reinstall all the updates but your system will be back in working order.

see if you can find a disc called bart PE which will fix/uncorrupt your windows system files.. that may be the problem
