Default wINDOWS xp IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON MY LAPTOP...HOW DO I CORRECT THIS PROBLEM?

Had a bad download and I think I caught an internet std. So now my Window Media Player or anything that has to do with windows doesn't work. A friend of mine had to go all the way into DOS to rework my computer for it to come back on; my computer was booted up from start-up...to F8...to Safe mode...and stuff was manually put in; repairing the system32 error.
