no, windows 98 was pretty much the best operating system that microsoft ever made, with the least bugs.

i was using windows 2000 professional until 2 weeks ago when i decided to upgrade to XP, and my husband has windows vista and even he says its a crappy operating system and much to difficult to navigate and he was in the computer business for over 10yrs.
I tried vista on his pc and found things very difficult to find and couldn't get to things that are readily accessible with XP. You may think i am stupid but its the newer systems that are under attack because they are so new, no one cares about windows 98, 2000, ME or millenium anymore, the hackers only want to crack and screw with the newer systems to see what vulnerabilities they have.

Well, I don't still use Windows 98...but Windows 98SE (Second Edition...less bugs in it) was one of my favorite operating systems. I dreaded having to deal with XP, when I bought my other XP computer years ago. I now have Windows Vista Home Premium. Vista is okay...it's not that great. I have a Pentium Dual-Core. 1.60GHz with 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR RAM. It starts up in about 45 seconds. Now, mind you...Windows 98SE would start up in probably 10-15 seconds on this system. It's not that big of a deal...but the more 'updated' Windows gets, the more Microsoft messes stuff up and causes new bugs. Fixing those bugs...seems to cause even more bugs. I quit using Windows 98 because of the security issue with updates no longer being issued. Microsoft quit working with the software updates for Win 98 because they are all about the money - and they knew that if they quit issuing updates for Windows 98...of course, people would run to their new operating system. Windows XP. Eventually, after Vista has been out for a couple of years...they'll do the same thing with pushing people from XP to Vista. Frankly, Vista bites. I don't need an interface that looks like a 3-D game. That's why 3-D games exist. Having an interface with all of the extra crap that Windows Vista has...it really bogs the computer down. It takes twice as long to start up, and I frankly go through and turn off a lot of the "Windows Vista" interface. I change the theme back to Windows Classic...I change my Start Menu back to the Windows 98/XP version of the Start Menu...I uninstall as much junk as I can (of course, Microsoft seems to team very well with manufacturers that have a bunch of junk software combined with the Windows Vista partition of the hard drive, for system recovery. So every time you do a system recovery...yeah, you get a computer "just like new". Just like new with all of the junk software mixed in with Vista.

Using a firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus...I'd probably still be willing to bet that Windows 98 would work out pretty good. I'm not going to try that personally, because my jobs require for me to be up to date and know how to operate the latest operating systems.

But on the contrary...Microsoft is using a lot of people. People love the 'latest and greatest'...and right after Vista came out, people suffered for it. The operating system was too new for printer manufacturers and various other peripherals. So basically, you had to buy a new printer or wait for the manufacturer of your current printer to put out a Vista driver. This took months and months, if at all. The more Windows gets updated...yes, the spiffier it gets. The more resources it takes, as well. Pretty soon...if this keeps up, in 10 years we'll be buying $3,000 gaming computers again just to be able to run the future windows versions (just like the late 90's when our computer cost $2,500). Vista has horrible interface...the graphics eat too many system resources, and there are way too many drivers running in the background.

Then there are some things that really tick me off about Vista. Simple things, like the disk defragmenter. I can defragment for hours...but they were dumb enough to not include a % meter to show that it didn't freeze up in the process; XP and 98 have that. Some features may be better...some other things in Vista are actually a downgrade to poorer quality than before. Vista takes about 2GB of RAM just to *run* properly...without any additional programs. I have some of the newest RAM in my computer right now...I don't like how slow it runs, even on a Dual-Core processor.

Also...Dell is a monopoly, just like Microsoft. Dell only uses their specific parts...so when something breaks on that system, you'll have to go through Dell. From what people have told me (I worked in Retail selling computers for 2+ years)...Dell isn't that great. Unless you are very fortunate and have one of those few Dell printers that lets you refill the cartridge or buy generic (some of which won't work anyway)...you have to order ink from Dell at a higher price. You have to get most components for the computer, from Dell. "Easy as Dell?" More like "Hard as Dell."

Oh yeah, don't get me started on the 12GB+ that Vista OS takes up. Put that up against Windows 98 with only about 500MB or so.
