Please help me with Windows Vista Errors?

Im having many errors with my computer;

first: I try to put on a game called "Parchisi" and the error message is:

Unable To Set Graphics mode

Then I try to load the Sims 2 and it says:

Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer This application will now terminate


I could've sworn I have used both applications on my laptop before, but now they just won't work.

Is there any Free, Downloadable, way I could solve this? Thanks
