Try going to Tools/ Internet Options/Advanced/ Check box Play animation on web pages. Gif files features storing multiple images in one file, accompanied by control data, is used extensively on the Web to produce simple animations.

As far as i know gif files and images in general are blocked by default in many email apps (to protect you from some nasty spyware residing inside such files - so you must disable this protection). In yahoo web mail for example you must first go to options and select that you want to display all images. They are blocked by default. If you use internet explorer you may have to change the internet options to allow image download...

P.S. In Outlook Express to fix your problem do:
Tools>Options>Security Tab>Uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".

At your own risk as they say
