laptop not turning on? ?

my mother in law runs some apartments, well when people don't pay or get evicted she gets pick at whats left. anyways she got a pretty nice compaq and gave it to me. it wouldn't turn on even with the power cord in. so i checked the ram and it was missing. well i bought some today put it in and nothing, still wont turn on. what could it be? i didn't see any big scuff marks that could have meant it was dropped and the lcd isn't crack like someone drop it.also i tried my power cord from my hp laptop (thinking the cord is wrong or messed up) and nothing . anyone have any advice
