My gateway laptop crashed and since then the drivers need updated but windows

wont find any updates? I have a gateway laptop and it crashed but i rebooted it with a gateway windows xp disk and everything seemed fine except that it has no sound and the screen resolution wont change. well id had this problem before on another computer so i knew to just go and update the drivers. When i went to the device manager and tried to update the drivers windows wouldnt find any updates. so I downloaded a tutorial of what to do and it ran me through step by step but when it told me to go to the device manager and update a certain thing, it wasnt there. so what do i do, is it fixable?
