Default Is there any way to reformat a Laptop hard drive that has a hard drive lock and...

...requires password? The laptop I have has a hard drive lock and requires a password to boot. I tried to reformat but It would not. Im guessing because of the hard drive lock. Is it possible to remove that hard drive and place it in an external enclosure and try to reformat from my desktop? I would just like to know before I go out and purchase an external enclosure.
